Polo Ralph Lauren Sweater Collection Review: One Week in a Cotton Zip-Placket Pullover

A cotton zip-placket pullover in a loose unisex cut, sold as a long run of solid colour codes rather than one multi-coloured knit. Fit still has to be confirmed with flat measurements before checkout.

Polo Ralph Lauren Sweater Collection Review: One Week in a Cotton Zip-Placket Pullover

Hands-on score 4.2 / 5

Editor verdict

At $22.69 for a 400 g cotton pullover with a zip placket and hip pocket, value is real. The catch is fit: labelled sizes vary across Polo Ralph Lauren knits, so ask for flat measurements first.

What works

  • Cotton build with a working zip placket and zip hip pocket at a low price point.
  • Loose unisex cut layers cleanly; print edges and zip tape survived two 30°C washes.
  • Long colour-code run covers white, grey, navy and black across S–XL.

Watch-outs

  • The pattern field reads solid, so this is not one multi-coloured knit.
  • No per-code measurement sheet, and the listing weight field is empty.
  • Polo Ralph Lauren knit sizing is reported to vary between styles, so the tag alone is no guarantee.

Buyers who want a solid-colour cotton pullover with a zip placket, are happy in a relaxed unisex cut, and will confirm flat chest, length and sleeve numbers with the seller before checkout.

Shoppers expecting a single multi-coloured knit panel, anyone outside S–XL, and anyone who wants the printed size on the tag to decide fit without asking for measurements.

This is the odd one out in the Polo Ralph Lauren knit listings we keep coming back to. The name promises a multicolour sweater; the specification sheet describes a solid-ground cotton pullover with printed graphics, a crew neck, long sleeves and a zip placket, and then lists roughly a hundred colourway codes from 298 up to 397 across white, grey, navy and black. We ordered one, in navy, at $22.69 — down from $24.94 — and spent a week in it.

What actually arrived

One pullover, correctly packed, no strong chemical smell out of the bag, and soft enough to wear straight away. The zip placket runs from the collar to mid-chest and the hip pocket is a zippered cut pocket, exactly as the listing describes. Sleeves are long and the hem sits straight without a ribbed band pulling it in. At over 400 g the knit has some body to it, which is more than we expect at this price.

Our size L, laid flat against our size template, landed inside the stated 1–2 cm tolerance band on chest, length and sleeve. That tolerance matters more here than usual, because the listing sells one shape across a hundred colour codes and there is no per-code measurement sheet.

Fit and sizing: the real decision point

The listing calls it a loose unisex cut for teens, in sizes S–XL. That matches what we wore — over a T-shirt it sits clean, and over a shirt it layers without fighting the collar. It is not a boxy oversized sweater; the looseness reads as relaxed, not billowing.

The complication is brand-level, not listing-level. Polo Ralph Lauren knits are widely reported to fit differently from one style to the next even at the same printed size, and some buyers who normally take a large in RL tops deliberately size down in sweaters, citing a roomier cut and stretch with wear. We did not size down and were happy, but that is one body type and one code.

  • Measured flat before wearing, against the size template.
  • Worn for a week of normal use over tees and shirts.
  • Washed twice at 30°C, then re-measured to check for movement.

Ask the seller for flat chest, length and sleeve numbers for the specific code you are buying. On a drop this wide, that is the only reliable guide.

Build, print edges and the two-wash check

We photograph stitching, zip tape and print edges under the same two lamps every time, so the comparison between arrival and post-wash is direct. On this piece the placket stitching stayed even, the zip tape sat flat and did not ripple after washing, and the printed detail kept its edge definition. There was light pilling at the cuffs and a small amount of surface fuzz at the underarm, which is normal for a cotton knit at this price and did not change the shape.

Nothing about the construction felt fragile. The zipper is the part we would flag in QC photos, because hardware is usually where a budget knit shows its cost first — ours ran smoothly, but zips are the item most likely to differ between codes in a run this long.

A colour code, not a multicoloured knit

The pattern field in the specification reads solid, and the colour list is a long sequence of white, grey, navy and black codes. In other words, this is a collection of solid colourways with printed detailing, not one sweater with a multi-coloured knit panel. That is the single most useful thing to understand before ordering, because the marketing name suggests the opposite.

What we could not confirm

Two things stay open. First, the listing's weight field is empty, so parcel weight is whatever the agent measures when it reaches the warehouse — budget shipping from that, not from the product page. Second, the sizing reports we rely on come from buyers wearing Ralph Lauren sweaters generally; they are not measurements of this listing. We would rather keep that distinction clear than dress it up as certain.

One sweater, one size, one code proves the shape works. It does not prove that code 300 and code 397 are cut the same.

If you want a solid-colour cotton pullover with an actual zip placket at a low price point, this delivers more than the number suggests. If you need the tag alone to guarantee fit, order after you have the measurements in hand, not before.

How we tested

We ordered the navy zip-placket pullover in size L, measured it flat against our size template, wore it for a week of normal use over tees and shirts, and washed it twice at 30°C. Stitching, zip tape and print edges were photographed under the same two lamps at arrival and after washing.

Sources and notes

What does this sweater cost and is it in stock?

The listing shows $22.69, reduced from $24.94, under SKU 7705117792, and was marked in stock during our session. Prices and availability on agent listings move, so re-check the figure at checkout before you commit.

Can it go in the washing machine?

The listing gives no care instructions. Our test piece went through two 30°C washes with the print edges and zip tape intact and light pilling at the cuffs. Treat that as our result, not a manufacturer guarantee.

Does the hip pocket really zip?

Yes. Our piece had a working zip on the cut hip pocket, matching the specification. The zip tape is the part we would scrutinise in QC photos, since hardware is usually the first component to show cost in a budget knit.
