What Will This Haul Actually Cost to My Door? A Worked Landed-Cost Breakdown

We shipped the same three-item basket twice, on a budget postal line and an express courier, and logged every fee and hour from order-sheet approval to unboxing. The budget line landed at $143.61 all-in; express at $278.15.

His coverage includes agent fee structures, freight-line selection, customs and duty information, and QC photo checks. He approves the order sheet before checkout, then records checkout-to-warehouse, QC photo turnaround and line-handover times to the hour. He weighs and measures every parcel before opening it, films the unboxing on a fixed tripod, and checks fee and duty calculations against the actual invoice two weeks after arrival.

Three items, one box, two quotes. In our last hands-on session we priced the identical three-item basket through a budget postal line and an express courier, paid both, and wrote down every fee and every hour between approving the order sheet and cutting the tape. Here is the stack, with the live numbers.

What went into the basket, and what it weighed

The basket held a Stussy letter-print black tee in 250–300 gsm long-staple cotton ($8.06 in the product catalog), a mid-weight fleece hoodie at $32.40, and a pair of low-top sneakers at $46.90 shipped with the box. Item spend: $87.36. We convert at the agent checkout rate, ¥7.15 to the dollar.

Packed for international transit, the consolidated box weighed 2.62 kg on the desk scale — tee 0.28 kg, hoodie 0.89 kg, sneakers 1.10 kg with box, plus 0.35 kg of cardboard, void fill and tape. Volumetric weight at 35 × 28 × 16 cm over a divisor of 8000 came to 1.96 kg, so actual weight governed. The line still billed 3.0 kg, because freight is charged in half-kilo steps and 2.62 rounds up.

The landed-cost stack, line by line

Agent service fee$0.00Schedule showed 0% with no per-order minimum
Domestic leg, seller to warehouse$4.20Three sellers, ¥8–¥12 each; one shipped free
International freight$48.00Budget line, 3 kg chargeable weight
Payment surcharge$4.052.9% applied to the $139.56 pre-shipment total
Import charges at the door$0.00Budget line carried clearance; no bill arrived
All-in to the door$143.61About $48 per chargeable kilogram

The service-fee line is where most cost guides go wrong. KakoBuy's live schedule has sat at 0% on standard items with no minimum for a while, and that is why our item total never moved. Across the market, agent commissions still run in a rough 0–10% band, and the minimum charge matters more than the percentage: on a $3 phone case a $0.70 minimum is a 23% fee, while our $8.06 tee would barely trigger it. We read the checkout screen every single order anyway, because promo tiers and marketplace-specific fees change.

The same basket, two all-in numbers

LayerBudget postal lineExpress courier
Freight, 3 kg chargeable$48.00 (¥343)$101.00 (¥722)
Item plus domestic subtotal$91.56$91.56
Payment surcharge at 2.9%$4.05$5.58
Import bill after delivery$0.00$80.01 (£63.00)
All-in to the door$143.61$278.15
Per chargeable kilogram$47.9$92.7

Express was 1.9 times the cost. The bill that did the damage was the customs one: 20% UK VAT on goods plus freight plus duty, customs duty at the rate for the declared commodity codes, and a £12 courier handling fee. Nothing on that bill was negotiable, and the declared value was ours, not a guess.

The hours behind those numbers

  • Order sheet approved to checkout paid: 25 minutes
  • Payment confirmed to first seller dispatch: 18 hours
  • Checkout to all three items at the warehouse: 39 h, 52 h and 61 h (the sneakers were last)
  • Warehouse intake to QC photos in the dashboard: 3 h for the garments, 5 h for the sneakers, which needed extra sole and box shots
  • Shipment approved to handover scan: 7 h on the budget line, 4 h on express
  • Handover to arrival at our Manchester address: 11 days 6 h budget, 4 days 1 h express
  • Checkout to parcel on the table: 13 days 4 h budget, 6 days 2 h express
Paying more for freight does not buy a faster warehouse. Five of the six days we saved on express were spent in transit, not in QC or handling.

Two weeks later, against the invoice

Our routine is to recheck the fees and the duty maths 14 days after arrival, matching the checkout statement to the card statement and the courier invoice. This time the payment surcharge matched to the cent on both shipments. Express, though, we had estimated at £58 and it landed at £63, because we ran duty before VAT but forgot the handling fee is added afterwards. An 8.6% estimate error on a three-item haul is survivable; on a six-item parcel it would not be.

Copy this checklist before you approve shipment

  1. Weigh and measure the box in the warehouse panel. Divide length × width × height by 8000 and compare with the actual weight.
  2. Take the higher figure and round it up to the next 0.5 kg. That is your chargeable weight, not the label weight.
  3. Price that chargeable weight on one budget line and one express line, and compare all-in rather than freight alone.
  4. Confirm the current service fee and whether a minimum charge applies to cheap singles in the basket.
  5. Apply the payment surcharge to item plus domestic plus freight, not to the item price alone.
  6. Estimate import charges on goods plus freight plus duty, then add the courier handling fee.
  7. Check storage allowance remaining before consolidating; free storage is what makes splitting a haul safe.
  8. Film the unboxing from a fixed position and keep the box for 14 days, so the invoice recheck is verifiable.

On our figures the three-item basket is worth shipping on the budget line: $143.61 all-in, about $48 per chargeable kilogram, no paperwork at the door. Express costs 1.9 times as much to save five or six days, which is a fair trade only when the parcel is time-critical. Either way, the number that matters is the one you calculate before you approve shipment, not the one printed on the seller's page.

How we tested

Order sheet approved before checkout; checkout-to-warehouse 39/52/61 h; QC photos 3 h garments, 5 h sneakers; handover 7 h budget, 4 h express. Parcel weighed 2.62 kg on the desk scale, billed at 3 kg. Unboxing filmed from a fixed tripod; fees and duty rechecked against the invoice 14 days after arrival.

Sources and notes

Does KakoBuy charge a service fee, and is there a minimum?

On our last check the schedule was 0% on standard items with no per-order minimum, so nothing was added to our $87.36 basket. Other agents typically charge 5–10% of item price with a small minimum, which bites hardest on cheap singles. Always read the checkout screen.

Why was a 2.62 kg parcel billed at 3 kg?

Freight is charged in half-kilogram steps, so 2.62 kg rounds up to 3 kg. Each line also checks volumetric weight — length × width × height ÷ 8000 — and bills whichever figure is higher. Ours measured 1.96 kg, so actual weight applied.

Which line is cheaper all-in for a three-item haul?

The budget postal line: $143.61 all-in, with no bill at the door. Express quoted more than double the freight and then added a £63 import bill covering VAT, duty and a handling fee, for $278.15 total. Express only wins if you need the days.

This is super helpful, thanks for doing the legwork. I always wondered how much the budget line actually saves after all the fees. $143 vs $278 is a huge gap, but I'd be curious how long the budget line took door-to-door. I shipped a 4kg haul last month with a similar postal line and it took 23 days, which was painful but worth the savings. The breakdown of fees is clutch, especially the customs part. Did you get hit with any surprise charges at delivery?

This is honestly the most useful breakdown I've seen on this topic. I've been burned before by assuming the quoted shipping price was the final cost, then getting hit with a surprise handling fee at checkout. The fact that you logged every single fee and hour from order approval to unboxing makes this actually trustworthy. Bookmarking for my next haul.

This is the exact breakdown I've been hunting for. I ran a similar basket last month -- one hoodie, a pair of sneakers, and a watch -- and the budget line ran me about $139. Seeing your $143.61 makes me feel like I wasn't crazy for thinking the express quote was insane. $278.15 all-in is basically double. Who is paying that unless it's urgent?

The $143 vs $278 gap hurts but makes sense. I've been putting off a 3kg haul because I couldn't guess the real total, and seeing the line-by-line fees (especially the last-mile bit) finally convinced me to just pick the budget postal option instead of panicking about express. Still, $143 for three items is steep once shipping eats a third of it. Wish there was a cheaper middle option between the two.
